Federal inlaid sideboard, Newport, RI
A superb Federal mahogany and inlaid antique sideboard, probably Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1810.
This fine antique Hepplewhite sideboard is vibrantly set with the finest cross banded and book matched mahogany veneers, highlighted with line and bell flower inlay. The exquisite figured mahogany veneers, combined with fine color and a French polished surface, make this a superb addition to any dining room. The finely proportioned case has "D" shaped ends fitted with short drawers and cabinet doors. These arched ends flank a long central drawer with an inlaid oval central frieze. Beneath this drawer is plenty of storage in the form of a pair of serpentine cabinet doors framed with canted convex panels. The case rests upon square tapered legs with spade feet each decorated with inlaid banding and graduated blossoms. At under six feet in length the case is a very agreeable small size, considering the fact that American Federal antique sideboards are typically larger than this one.
